SMTP Authenticationn FAQ: Email Client Setup

Eudora 6.x
  1. Start your Eudora 6.x client and click Tools from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select Options... from the drop down menu.
  2. Click on the Checking Mail category and type your full email address (example: john.smith@domain.com) in the text field under Login Name.
  3. Click on the Sending Mail category then click on the checkbox next to the description Allow authentication. Click the OK button. Your client is now configured for SMTP Authentication.
  4. *Optional* Click on the Incoming Mail category, remove the checkmark next to the description Leave mail on server.

Netscape 7.x
  1. Start your Netscape 7.x client and click Edit from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings... from the drop down menu.
  2. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) and type your full email address (example: john.smith@domain.com) in the text field next to User Name. Click the OK button. Your client is now configured for SMTP Authentication.
  3. *Optional* Click on Server Settings and remove the checkmark next to the description Leave messages on server. Click the OK button.

Microsoft Outlook 2003
  1. Start your Microsoft Outlook 2003 client and click Tools from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select E-mail Accounts from the drop down menu.
  2. From the E-Mail section, select the option button next to View or change existing e-mail accounts. Click the Next button.
  3. Highlight your E-Mail account and then click the Change button.
  4. Under the Logon Information section, type your full email address (example: john.smith@domain.com) in the text field next to User Name. Click More Settings... to proceed to the next step.
  5. Click the Outgoing Server tab then click on the checkbox next to the description My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. By default, the option button next to Use same settings as my incoming mail server should be selected. If it is not selected, please select it by clicking on the option button. Once completed please click the OK button.
  6. Click the Next button then click Finish. Your client is now configured for SMTP Authentication.
  7. *Optional* Under the Advanced tab, remove the checkmark next to the description Leave a copy of messages on the server.

Microsoft Outlook 2000
  1. Start your Microsoft Outlook 2000 client and click Tools from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select Accounts from the drop down menu.
  2. Click on the Mail tab then highlight your E-mail account. Click the Properties button.
  3. Click on the Servers tab and type your full email address (example: user@domain.com) in the text field next to Account name. Click on the checkbox next to the description My server requires authentication. Click on the Settings... button to proceed to next step.

  1. Start your Microsoft Outlook XP client and click Tools from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Select E-mail Accounts from the drop down menu.

Eudora 4.2.2
  1. Close Eudora.
  2. Go to the EUDORA.INI file on your hard drive. This file should be found in the C:\EUDORA or C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora directories.
  3. Open the INI file with Notepad and add the following two lines to the [Settings] section:

    SMTPAuthRequired=1
    SMTPAuthAllowed=1
  4. Save the file, and restart Eudora. If you receive a 550 error when sending mail, check the INI file for errors and try again.

Eudora 4.3 and higher
  1. Open Eudora.
  2. Select Options from the Tools menu.
  3. Under the Category heading on the left, click Sending Mail.
  4. Select Allow authentication on the right side of the Options window. You can also do this for your personalities under Tools: Personalities. Note: Eudora uses the login name specified on the Checking Mail configuration option, which is in the format of username@mail.domain.com.
  5. Click OK.

Forté Agent 1.8 and later
  1. Open the User and System Profile window from the Agent Options menu.
  2. Click the System tab and click the SMTP Authentication button to open the settings window.
  3. Make sure the Login with a username and password option is selected, and that the Use POP username and password checkbox is checked.

Note for Free Agent 1.x users: Although Free Agent does have limited capability to send email, it does not support SMTP authentication. Since it also does not accept incoming email, it cannot do the alternate SMTP after POP method of authentication either.

Lotus Notes R5 & R6
  1. Open the Lotus Notes desktop client.
  2. Select the address book.
  3. Click View, Then select Advanced, then Accounts.
  4. Locate the account being utilized to send Outbound SMTP (Protocol will be SMTP).
  5. Open the document and review settings. If a username and password are not present in the Login name and password fields click Edit Account.
  6. Enter the full username (example: john.smith@company.com) and password in the respective fields then click Save and Close.

Note: R5 Notes clients must be using Maintenance Release 5.0.9 or above due to an issue in previous versions. Refer to document SPR# SKAI4VWG86 on IBM's support site for additional information.

Microsoft Outlook 97

SMTP authentication is not available in Outlook 97. You must upgrade your email client before continuing.

  1. Select Tools, Internet Options, Sending (SMTP).
  2. Choose Authenticate by using my POP3 setting for username and password.

  1. Select Tools, Internet Options, Sending (SMTP).
  2. Select mail.yourdomain.com in the list, then click Edit...
  3. Select Security.
  4. In the SMTP Authentication section, click the Login to the SMTP server using a POP3 username/password button. Click Select...
  5. Select your POP account in the list and click Select. Click OK twice.

Opera 7.x
  1. Open Opera.
  2. Select Manage accounts... from the Tools menu.
  3. Click your account in the Account list, then click Edit...
  4. Select Servers.
  5. In the Outgoing SMTP Server section, select Auto in the Authentication box and type your full email address (username@domain.com) into the Username field and your email password into the Password field.
  6. Click OK. Click Close.

The Bat!
  1. Select Account from the Bat! menu and open Properties.
  2. Select Transport.
  3. In the Send Mail section, click the Authentication button.
  4. Make sure the Perform SMTP Authentication (RFC 2554) checkbox is checked.

Microsoft Entourage
  1. Open Microsoft Entourage.
  2. Select Accounts from the Tools menu.
  3. Select your email account from the list and click the Edit button.
  4. Click the button labeled Click here for advanced sending options under "Sending Mail" at the bottom.
  5. Place a check in the box labeled SMTP server requires authentication.
  6. Select Log on using and type your full email address (username@domain.com) into the Account ID: field and your email password into the Password: field. Close the advanced sending options dialog box.
  7. Click OK.

Eudora 4.2.2
  1. Open a new message in Eudora (no need to address it or anything).
  2. Type or copy and paste the following into the body of the message (include the angle brackets):

    <x-eudora-setting:264=y>
  3. Double click on the line you just entered.
  4. Type "Y" in the resulting dialog box (without quotes) and hit "Set Setting".
  5. Close the message.
  6. Next, go to the Special menu and select Settings...
  7. Click OK.

Eudora 4.3 and higher
  1. Select Settings... from the Special menu.
  2. Click Sending Mail on the Category list on the left.
  3. Select Allow authentication on the right side of the Options window.
  4. Click OK.

Netscape 6.x & 7.x
  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Click Mail on the Tasks menu.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Mail/News Account Settings... (6.x) or Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings... (7.x).
  4. In the left pane of the Account Settings window, click to select Outgoing (SMTP) Server.
  5. Click to select Always use name and password check box.
  6. In the User Name: box, enter your full email address (username@domain.com).
  7. Click OK.
  8. You will prompted for your password when sending a message. Enter your email password in the dialog box. To have Netscape save your password, click to select Use Password Manager to remember this password option when prompted for your password.

Microsoft Outlook Express 5.x
  1. Select Accounts from the Tools menu.
  2. Select your email account and click the Edit button.
  3. Under Sending Mail at the bottom, click the Click here for advanced sending options.
  4. Place a check next to SMTP server requires authentication.
  5. By default, the option button next to the description Use same settings as my incoming mail server should be selected. If it is not selected, select it by clicking on the option button.
  6. Click the Close button in the upper left of the Advanced Sending Options drop down window to return to the Edit Account window.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click the Close button in the upper left of the Accounts window.
  9. Quit Outlook Express. The next time you start Outlook Express the new settings will take affect.

OSX Mail
  1. Open OSX Mail.
  2. Select Preferences from the Mail menu.
  3. Select your email account and select Edit.
  4. Select Add server from the Outgoing Mail Server menu.
  5. In the SMTP Server Options dialog window, type mail.domain.com in the Outgoing Mail Server: field
  6. Select Password from the Authentication menu.
  7. Enter your full email address (username@domain.com) in the User name: field.
  8. Type your password into the SMTP Password field.
  9. Click OK.

Mozilla 1.3.1
  1. Click on Edit -> Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings.
  2. Click on Server Setting for your email account and make sure User Name contains only your user name (do not append @domain.com or @mail.domain.com).
  3. On left hand menu, at the very bottom, select Outgoing Server (SMTP).
  4. Enter mail.domain.com into Server Name.
  5. Leave Port blank.
  6. Place a check in User Name and Password and enter your full email address (user@domain.com) into the User Name field.

  1. Open the menu Tools, Mail Settings.
  2. Select your account and click Edit.
  3. In the tab Sending Mail, fill in the server as mail.domain.com
  4. Mark Server Requires Authentication then enter only your user name (do not append @domain.com or @mail.domain.com) in User.
  5. Select NT Login as the authentication type. If you are not sure about the authentication type, click Check Supported Type and your client will get the right one from the server.

  1. Open the menu Settings, Configure Email.
  2. Click on the Network icon, Sending tab, select your account and click Modify.
  3. At the General tab, enter the server name as mail.domain.com.
  4. Mark Server Requires Authentication then enter only your user name (do not append @domain.com or @mail.domain.com) in Login, and your password.
  5. At the Security tab select LOGIN as the authentication method.
