Setting up Junk-mail filtering Thunderbird

(these instructions apply to Thunderbird 1.5)

  1. Open up Thunderbird.
  2. Go to "Tools" -> "Junk Mail Controls".

  3. In the drop down list choose the folder/account where your Domain Direct email is being stored. If your email account is set to the default POP type, then your mail may be stored in the Local Folders. If your account is set up as an IMAP account, or you chose to store your POP mail in a separate folder then you will see a specific option for the account in the list.

  4. Click on the "Adaptive Filter" tab. Make sure the "Enable adaptive junk mail detection" box is checked.

  5. Click on the "Settings" tab and choose how you wish to manage emails that are detected as junk. By default email detected as junk will simply be marked as such and remain in the inbox.

  6. Thunderbird needs to be trained to detect spam or junk. When you receive a message that is spam, select it and click on the "Junk" icon in toolbar.

  7. You should also teach Thunderbird what emails are not junk by selecting and right-clicking on any message that is not junk and choosing "Mark" -> "As Not Junk".

If you choose to have messages that are marked as junk moved to another folder automatically, you should check that folder frequently for the first while to make sure that no non-junk emails have been put in there. If you find that some have, you should move them back in to the inbox and mark them as not junk.
